Let’s Put Him Back
John 1:12 (KJV)
“But as many as received Him, to them gave He power…” – John 1:12 (KJV)
It is that time of the year when we get very excited as we think of all the festivities ahead of us. Our focus is on decorations, food, and entertainment. We are persuaded to spend what we do not have on things we do not need. It is called Christmas. We set aside this time in the Christian calendar to celebrate our Lord Jesus’ birth, the gift that was given to the world to save mankind.
When we recall the events surrounding His birth, we realise there was no party, only the Good News was shared. He arrived quietly in a place where animals slept. His only recognition came from wise men who journeyed from the east to Jerusalem, seeking the new King and bearing significant gifts. That was enough to send king Herod into a frenzy – another King? Who was this King who was not his descendant? Jesus’ earthly parents would soon have to flee with Him to save His life.
But how does this scene translate into decorations, gift exchanges, fun, and frolic? It does not. We have laid aside this life-changing event of Jesus’ birth, the advent, and the purpose for which He came, for the more attractive commercial hustle and bustle that all seem to love. We hang decorations, cook lavishly, connect with friends and family, and forget or diminish the real reason for this season.
Jesus Christ was given to us so that our lives might have purpose. He declared, “…without Me, you can do nothing.” – John 15:5 (NKJV). Our achievements may mean a lot to us and those we influence but none of this means anything without our understanding of Who Jesus is. All things were made by Him – John 1:3 (NKJV) and as we receive Him, He gives us power to become the sons of God. – John 1:12 (KJV).
Becoming a son of God must be our highest priority. Let’s give Him a chance to make something beautiful out of our lives. Let’s receive Him this Christmastime, and put Him back where He belongs – in the centre, not only now but all year long.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, we count it a privilege to be called sons of God. But this was only possible because You came into this world to save us and to reconcile us back to God, our heavenly Father. As we celebrate this Christmas, remind us of Who we should celebrate, Jesus Christ, Saviour of the world. Amen.
